A Picture to Remember
Directed by Olga Chernykh • 2023 • Ukraine
Olga Chernykh’s intimate, essayistic documentary examines the war in Ukraine through the eyes of three generations of women from a displaced Donetsk family. The director’s grandmother remains in occupied Donbas, while her mother now works in a Kyiv morgue; the recordings Chernykh makes of their conversations form the basis for a fragmented narrative supplemented by footage from the family archive and news reports from the chaotic present. A Picture to Remember draws out a personal and national history of war and reconstruction, nostalgia and trauma, whose structure reflects the imperfect nature of memory itself.
