Expanded from an episode of Kieślowski’s epic television serial Dekalog, A Short Film about Love represents the Polish master at his most sensitive and daring. By day, 19-year-old Tomek (Olaf Lubaszenko) works for the post office. By night, he spies on his beautiful, promiscuous neighbour Magda (Grażyna Szapołowska) through a telescope. But as Tomek attempts to bridge the physical and emotional distances between himself and the object of his adoration, he realises the painful gap between ideal and reality. Kieślowski’s profoundly empathetic study of isolation and connection recalls Hitchcock and Bergman, making expert use of its tower block setting and featuring a pair of stunning central performances.
