Compartment No. 6
Directed by Juho Kuosmanen • 2021 • Finland/Russia
Juho Kuosmanen’s transnational odd couple odyssey is an homage to a lost era of travel and connection that won the Grand Prix at Cannes. In the chaotic post-Soviet nineties, Finnish grad student Laura (Seidi Haarla) boards a sleeper train from Moscow to the Arctic Circle in search of prehistoric rock carvings. When her flighty Russian lover Irina (Dinara Drukarova) drops out of the trip, she finds herself sharing a compartment with Lyokha (Anora star Yura Borisov), a loutish Russian miner heading north for work. In the claustrophobic world of the train carriage, the pair slowly begin to let their guards down as their journey becomes an inward reflection on their place in the world. Produced shortly before Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Compartment No. 6 looks back to an era of tentative rapprochement that has since turned to aggression.
