Corn Island

Corn Island

Directed by George Ovashvili • 2014 • Georgia

George Ovashvili’s award-winning drama is both a political parable and a portrait of man’s relationship with nature. In the Enguri River that divides Georgia from the disputed territory of Abkhazia, washed-up debris forms a tiny island – a lifeline for local farmers who can use this fertile temporary land to grow corn ahead of the winter months. As an ageing farmer and his granddaughter tend to their crops over the course of the summer, they face threats from the military units patrolling the waterways. Unfolding almost without dialogue, attentive to the rhythms of labour and the power of gestures and glances, Corn Island is a minimalist marvel.
