Dwelling Among the Gods
Directed by Vuk Ršumović • 2024 • Serbia
Based on real events, Vuk Ršumović’s Dwelling Among the Gods recasts the human drama of the migrant experience as a modern-day Greek tragedy. Co-written by journalist Momir Turudić and drawing on his experiences reporting on the so-called migration “crisis” of 2015, the film follows Fereshteh (a riveting Fereshteh Hosseini), an Afghan woman freshly arrived in Belgrade with her family, en route to Germany. While detained in a refugee camp, Fereshteh learns that a young Afghan man who recently drowned in the city might be her missing brother Ali, and embarks on a brutal bureaucratic odyssey to claim his body and give him a proper burial. Replete with knowing references to Sophocle’s immortal tragedy of Antigone, Ršumović’s film unsparingly examines the struggle for human dignity in the face of an unfeeling world.
