One of Otar Iosseliani’s most acclaimed French features, this kaleidoscopic farce traces the fluctuating fortunes of an aristocratic family on the outskirts of Paris. Iosseliani himself plays the drunken father, sequestered away by the fierce, businesswoman matriarch (Lily Lavina). Their son Nicholas (Nico Tarielashvili), meanwhile, lives a double life as a dishwasher among the homeless and helpless in the big city. With consummate skill, Iosseliani weaves together a host of storylines and incidental characters, constructing a satire on privilege and etiquette that recalls the dream worlds of Jacques Tati and the cynicism of Luis Buñuel.
