Banned by the Soviet authorities outside of Lithuania, this controversial classic blends the personal and the political against stunning coastal landscapes. 1944, on the Curonian Spit: one side of this Baltic lagoon is occupied by the retreating Germans, the other by the advancing Soviets. When widowed fisherman Kasparas moves in with his brother Andrius and sister-in-law – and former lover – Agnė to escape the collapsing Nazi forces, he finds himself caught up, like Lithuania itself, in perilous questions of collaboration and occupation, resistance and escape. Based on a novel by the Latvian writer Egons Līvs, this is a gem of Baltic cinema that remains largely unknown outside of the region.
