Fugue
Directed by Agnieszka Smoczyńska • 2018 • Poland
Two years after she wandered up the railway tracks into Warsaw’s main train station, an anonymous amnesiac woman who calls herself Alicja is unexpectedly reunited with her lost family. But the anarchic, free-spirited woman who arrives on their doorstep is nothing like Kinga, the modest bourgeois wife that husband Krzysztof and son Daniel used to know. Polish director Agnieszka Smoczyńska followed her award-winning mermaid-horror debut The Lure with this psychological mystery that uncoils with a gently menacing air. With its ambiguous narrative anchored by an astonishing lead performance from screenwriter Gabriela Muskała, Fugue carefully deconstructs received notions of motherhood and female identity, revealing the alienation behind the façade of family life.
