Holiday Special: four bad trip classics for the summer season

Holiday Special: four bad trip classics for the summer season

Available until 3 September
When it comes to movies, summer holidays rarely pass without incident. It’s a tried and tested formula: characters whisked away from everyday life, routines suspended, tempers frayed, mercury rising – and away we go. Klassiki’s new collection presents four tales of unhappy holidays from Eastern Europe that prove that life isn’t always a beach.

Dutch-Bosnian director Ena Sendijarević concocts a summery but unsentimental coming-of-age drama out of the fault lines between Western and Eastern Europe in her award-winning Take Me Somewhere Nice (2019), in which a diaspora teen’s trip to the homeland takes some disturbing turns. A portrait of familial breakdown that doubles as pointed social critique, End of Season (2019) is the debut feature from Azerbaijani talent Elmar Imanov: a study in alienation reminiscent of Antonioni centred around an ill-fated trip to the beach. In Anna Kazejak’s Fucking Bornholm (2022), a weekend camping trip on a beautiful Danish island quickly goes south for two Polish couples in a caustic satire on masculinity, motherhood, and middle class disintegration. And Lithuania’s Laurynas Bareiša establishes himself as one of the Baltics’ most promising filmmakers with the elliptical drama Drowning Dry (2024), where a weekend at the family lake house uncovers the fault lines in the lives of two sisters and their conceited husbands.
