Igor Kovalyov: three animations

As part of their Klassiki Picks season, the Quay Brothers present three shorts from Ukrainian animator Igor Kovalyov.

Raised in Kyiv, Kovalyov made his name as an animator in the dying days of the Soviet Union, before moving to America and the renowned Klasky-Csupó studio. His work on The Simpsons and Rugrats brought his acclaim, but he never abandoned his experimental origins, demonstrated here in three titles that span his career: Hen, His Wife (1990) and Andrei Svislotskiy from his Russian days, and Milch from his US sojourn. All three capture his unique blend of the domestic and the absurd, the ordinary and the grotesque.
