I’m Not Everything I Want to Be
Directed by Klára Tasovská • 2024 • Czechia
Klára Tasovská’s immersive and intimate documentary tells the story of Czech photographer Libuše Jarcovjáková: the “Nan Goldin of Prague” whose uncompromising images of 1970s and 1980s Czechoslovakia capture a lost subcultural world of underground queer life and artistic struggle. Composed entirely of Jarcovjáková’s photographs, accompanied by diary extracts read by the artist, the film takes us back to the crushed promise of the Prague Spring in 1968, through failed relationships, alcohol abuse, menial labour, journeys to Tokyo and Berlin, and the secret gay scene of communist era Prague. Jarcovjáková’s quest for aesthetic and emotional freedom parallels the journey of her homeland out of one-party rule, creating a dynamic portrait of an artist emerging from obscurity after years of neglect.
