Bring home the Halloween season with this grisly and gripping horror from Kazakhstan’s genre maestro Adilkhan Yerzhanov. Following a series of mysterious deaths at a rural maternity hospital, a laconic city detective (Kuantai Abdimadi) is dispatched to the sticks to find some answers. With the help of a troubled clairvoyant (Anna Starchenko), he learns that the locals are in thrall to violent supernatural forces straight out of Kazakh folklore. Compiled from the first three episodes of an anthology series, Kazakh Scary Tales blends Yerzhanov’s deadpan critique of corruption and social breakdown with wonderfully hand-wrought folk horror chills; the result is a gruesome, steppe-bound twist on Twin Peaks meets The Wicker Man.
