Klondike
Directed by Maryna Er Gorbach • 2022 • Ukraine
Maryna Er Gorbach’s gripping and poetic war drama looks back ten years to the fateful summer of 2014 and the early days of the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Expectant parents Irka and Tolik (Oksana Cherkashyna and Serhiy Shadrin) find themselves caught between two worlds when a stray mortar fired by Russian-backed separatists blows away one side of their rural Donbas home. When the same forces shoot down Malaysian Airlines Flight 17 over the couple’s village, their surreal predicament grows ever more dangerous. In sweeping long shots, Er Gorbach captures the austerely beautiful Donetsk landscape on the brink of devastation, against which her heavily pregnant protagonist stands as a symbol of resilience and resistance to the masculine brutality of war. A vital portrait of eastern Ukraine at a tragic turning point in history.
