Andrzej Wajda’s masterful meditation on propaganda and disillusionment has been described as Poland’s Citizen Kane. Young filmmaker Agnieszka (Krystyna Janda) sets out to make a documentary about Mateusz Birkut (Jerzy Radziwilowicz), a hero of labour during the Stalinist 1950s who has since disappeared into obscurity. As Agnieszka uncovers the reality behind the legend, Wajda crafts his most potent reflection on the intersection of cinema and political power, deploying recreated newsreels and interviews alongside the present-day drama. Together with its ad-hoc sequel, Man of Iron (1981), the film heralded the rise of the Solidarity union and confirmed Wajda’s position as the foremost chronicler of his nation’s troubled modern history.
