Rasmus Merivoo’s playful horror-comedy take on Estonia’s local legends is a wicked treat. The director’s own children star as Mia and Kevin, phone-addled city kids who are whisked to the countryside and left in the care of their eccentric grandmother (Mari Lili) by their exasperated parents. Deprived of internet access and unimpressed by grandma’s rustic surroundings, the bored siblings stumble upon instructions to create the titular kratt: a magical figure from Estonian folklore that will fulfil any domestic task – at a price. Soon the pair have sold their grandmother’s soul and the chaos begins, drawing in everyone from local conservationists to the US President. Merivoo’s full-throttle caper, a hybrid of the Moomins and Gremlins, contains something for the whole family.
