One of the most striking debuts in recent Ukrainian cinema, Pamfir is a magical realist reimagining of the gangster film imbued with folkloric vitality. When devoted family man and former smuggler Leonid (Oleksandr Yatsentiuk) returns to his home village in the Carpathian Mountains ahead of the New Year carnival celebrations, he thinks he has left his old life behind him. But when he is compelled to to take on one last smuggling job, he finds himself up against the corrupt local officials and crooks who have the locals in their thrall. In sweeping Steadicam shots, Dmytro Sukholytkyy-Sobchuk conjures a vividly realised world of demons and criminals. The result is a thriller shot through with paganistic energy and visual intensity that blurs the boundaries between righteous and wrongdoer.
