Pelikan Blue
Directed by László Csáki • 2024 • Hungary
László Csáki’s livewire animated documentary recreates the anything-goes atmosphere of the early nineties, when borders were toppling across Europe. After the fall of the Iron Curtain, young Hungarians dreamed of finally travelling abroad – but few could afford the train tickets. In Csáki’s reimagining of real-life testimonies from the period, a trio of enterprising friends devise a scheme to forge train tickets using household detergent, embarking on a continental odyssey that sees them transform into unsuspecting kingpins on the run from the law. Seamlessly blending animation styles and archival footage, Pelikan Blue captures the eternal appeal – and danger – of freedom.
