I Will Revenge this World with Love – S. Paradjanov
Perspectives on Parajanov: late masterpieces and a documentary tribute

Directed by Zara Jian • 2024 • Armenia
In 2022, as war rages in Ukraine and tensions mount over Nagorno-Karabakh, Armenian filmmaker Zara Jian returns to her homeland in search of artistic and political inspiration. She finds it in the creativity and bravery of Sergei Parajanov, the celebrated auteur behind The Colour of Pomegranates and Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors who suffered censorship and imprisonment at the hands of the Soviet authorities. Using the Parajanov Museum in Yerevan as a reference point, Jian’s genre-bending documentary explores her icon’s enduring legacy via staged reconstructions, archival footage, and talking head interviews with luminaries including Atom Egoyan and Emir Kusturica. The result is a fitting tribute to a man who preached a simple but vital lesson: that it is our responsibility not to become, in Jian’s words, “instruments of a toxic reality.”
