Juraj Lerotić writes, directs, and stars in this acutely moving family drama. Unfolding over 24 hours, Safe Place sees Bruno (Lerotić) and his mother (Snježana Sinovčić Šiškov) battle against a dysfunctional healthcare system and their own demons as they attempt to save the life of suicidal younger brother Damir (a remarkable Goran Marković). The personal stakes of the narrative for Lerotić come into stark focus as the film slips between naturalism and Brechtian fantasy. The film deservedly won a trio of awards at Locarno: for Best First Feature, Best Emerging Director, and Best Actor.
