This hand-drawn animation from Kazakh artist Asel Kadyrkhanova probes the relationship between memory, trauma, and national history. Based on the memoirs of poet Gafu Kairbekov, the film reimagines the accounts of survivors of the man made famine that devastated Kazakhstan in the 1930s. Through non-linear narrative and striking imagery of the human and animal worlds, Kadyrkhanova poses questions about the nature of collective memory in the aftermath of catastrophe.
