Based on true events, Miroslav Terzić’s Stitches reckons with a forgotten trauma from the time of Yugoslavia’s collapse. Ana (a remarkable Snežana Bogdanović) is a Belgrade seamstress who is haunted by the loss of her stillborn son 18 years previously. Convinced that the truth has been hidden from her, her fragile world is upended by fresh news that the truth about her loss may be within reach. Terzić combines taut psychological drama with a noirish detective plot in this sensitive fictionalisation of a real-life scandal: hundreds of suspected infant abductions, now being slowly uncovered by grieving relatives in the Serbian courts.
