Take Me Somewhere Nice

Take Me Somewhere Nice

Directed by Ena Sendijarević • 2019 • Bosnia and Herzegovina/Netherlands

Dutch-Bosnian director Ena Sendijarević concocts a summery but unsentimental coming-of-age drama out of the fault lines between Western and Eastern Europe in this award-winning feature. Born and raised in the Netherlands, Alma (Sara Luna Zorić) is on the verge of adulthood when she leaves her mother’s home to visit her estranged and ailing father in Bosnia. Accompanied by her cousins Emir (Ernad Prnjavorac) and his best friend Denis (Lazar Dragojević), Alma’s trip across this alien but familiar country will prove to be a journey to the heart of her own conflicted identity. With hints of American masters like Jim Jarmusch and Wes Anderson in its candy-coloured palette and a sharply critical take on sexuality and diaspora politics, this is a striking debut.
