Dalibor Matanić weaves together three tales of love across the ethnic divides of the former Yugoslavia in this Cannes-winning drama. Structured as three distinct narratives each set a decade apart in the same two Dalmatian villages, the strands of The High Sun all star Tihana Lazović and Goran Marković as a different pairing of Serbian woman and Croatian man: from a Balkan take on Romeo and Juliet on the eve of the war, to the optimism of the closing section’s 21st-century reconciliation. With great compassion, Matanić explores how conflict curdles human relationships – and how love can set us free from the traumas of our personal and political histories.
