Emerging Czech filmmaker Vojtěch Strakatý captures the hazy indecision and painful pulls of adolescence in his dreamlike sophomore feature. Teenager Bětka (Lucie Fingerhutová) is spending the summer at a rustic lake house with her best friend Alma (Nikola Kylarová) and her older sister Marie (Eliška Bašusová). Their everyday hopes, fears, and squabbles are upended by the appearance of a mysterious stranger and the discovery of a magical portal on a nearby island that threatens to transform their young lives forever. A subtle reinvention of the coming-of-age tale, this study in sisterhood combines unhurried landscape photography with the keen emotions of female friendship.
