The Trap

The Trap

Directed by Nadejda Koseva • 2024 • Bulgaria

Nadejda Koseva’s sophomore feature is a portrait of man at war with nature and himself. On the banks of the Danube, an elderly loner named Yovo (Alexander Trifonov) tends to his private zoo. His reclusive life is upended when his dog is enlisted for a ritualistic trophy hunt in honour of a foreign investor who plans to dump nuclear waste in the unspoiled surroundings. The growing tension between Yovo and the investor’s shadowy local representatives unearths long-held enmities and threatens to destroy his precarious existence. Koseva’s beautifully taut depiction of Bulgaria’s social ills confirms her position as one of her nation’s finest filmmakers.
