The latest feature from a modern master of Krygyz film, This Is What I Remember is a quiet reckoning with a life lived in self-imposed exile. The director himself stars as Zarlyk, an elderly man who returns to his home village after years spent as a migrant labourer in Russia. Afflicted with amnesia, he struggles to come to terms with a family (featuring the director’s own son Mirlan) and community he can no longer recognise. A calmly reflective take on the social and cultural forces at play in the post-Soviet periphery.
