Kateryna Gornostai’s follow-up to the award-winning teen drama Stop-Zemlia is a documentary portrait of school life during wartime. Shot between 2023 and 2024 in locations across Ukraine, Timestamp captures the abnormal new normality for young people in the country: classes conducted in bunkers and subway stations, lessons in combat medicine, school buildings destroyed by bombs, constant air raid sirens. The rituals and rhythms of young life are maintained in the face of overwhelming odds. Gornostai’s patchwork approach conveys the different faces of war without recourse to voiceover, interviews, or reconstructions, bypassing bravado and sensationalism to get to the human heart of life lived in the shadow of aggression.
