Memory, Resistance, and (In)Visibility: Queer Cinema in the Region of the Former Yugoslavia

In this lecture, Anamarija Horvat introduces us to the representation of queer people in cinema from the former Yugoslav states. Exploring themes of memory, resistance, and visibility, Horvat questions the definition of “queer film”, examining the ways in which straight-identified directors have created queer characters for the benefit of a presume heterosexual majority.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER:

Anamarija Horvat is a lecturer and researcher in media studies at Northumbria University, UK. She has published widely on topics related to cinema and television studies, and her work is especially focused on representations of gender and sexuality onscreen. Her monograph Screening Queer Memory: LGBTQ Pasts in Contemporary Film and Television (2021) is the first academic book to examine how LGBTQ memory is shaped through film and television, and her other work has appeared in journals such as Feminist Media Studies, Critical Studies in Television and Transnational Screens, and in venues like The Oxford Encyclopaedia of Queer Studies and Communication.
