One of Miklós Jancsó’s most potent examinations of the corrupting influence of power, Silence and Cry is set in 1919 after the fall of the short-lived Hungarian Soviet Republic to the fascist regime of Miklós Horthy. András Kozák stars as István, a communist soldier on the run from the ensuing reprisals, who finds shelter in a farm run by the harried Károly (József Madaras), his wife Terez (Mari Törőcsik), and her mysterious companion Anna (Andrea Drahota). As the police state tightens its grip, loyalties are pushed to the brink. Jancsó swaps the epic scale of breakout hits The Round-Up and The Red and the White for an intimate domestic canvas, once again plumbing his nation’s history for a portrait of suspicion and persecution captured in his trademark sinuous long shots.
