The Concert

Directed by István Szabó • 1962 • Hungary
This playful musical short perfectly captures the new wave sensibilities of a young István Szabó. When a group of distracted workers abandon the piano they are moving on the banks of the Danube, passers-by find themselves drawn to the instrument – with unpredictable results. Produced as a diploma project while still at film school, The Concert helped launch Szabó’s career when it won at the Oberhausen Short Film Festival in 1963. A charming miniature reminiscent of Truffaut and Varda that set the stage for one of the great careers in Hungarian cinema.
