Péter Gothár’s rarely screened cult classic presents a Kafkaesque odyssey through the squalor and black comedy of late socialist collapse. When middle-aged office worker Gizella (Mari Nagy) receives an unexpected promotion, she finds herself assigned to a remote outpost in the Transylvanian mountains. Escorted through landscapes of industrial decay by a succession of strange men speaking broken Hungarian, her attempts to reach her new station become ever more absurd and disturbing. Like a particularly unhinged take on Andrei Tarkovsky’s Stalker, Gothár’s adaptation of a story by Ádám Bodor was initially blocked by Hungary’s communist authorities and only completed in the 1990s. It remains a criminally underseen account of an ever more distant era.
