In 1979, Boryana’s dreams of escaping communist Bulgaria are undone by the miraculous birth, without an umbilical cord, of her daughter Viktoria. Symbolically proclaimed “baby of the decade” by the state, Viktoria lives a pampered life until the eventual collapse of communism throws her and her mother into a strange new world – but one that contains the possibility of reconciliation. Maya Vitkova’s sweeping but intimate portrait of three generations of womanhood, set against the backdrop of political turmoil and captured with magical realist panache, is one of the most striking debut features of the 21st century.
