Robert Budina’s chilly and enthralling study in corruption and collective guilt unfolds on the seemingly serene shore of Albania’s Lake Ohrid, where steely town planner Aida (Gresa Pallaska) and her husband Ilir (Arben Bajraktaraj) feather their nest with construction deals and local power plays. When their son is accused of rape, however, Aida must face up to her complicity in a patriarchal system that shelters and nurtures wrongdoers. Based on real cases that rocked Albania in the 2010s, and shot with icy composure by Romanian New Wave stalwart Marius Panduru, Waterdrop expertly exposes a world in which no one is free of sin.
