Directed by Katalin Moldovai • 2023 • Hungary

Debutante Katalin Moldovai delivers a stinging tale of conservative reaction and bureaucratic absurdity in modern Hungary. Ana (Ágnes Krasznahorkai) is a beloved literature teacher whose world is turned upside down when the powerful father of one of her students files an official complaint: he is outraged that Ana has assigned his son a film about the gay relationship between French poets Arthur Rimbaud and Paul Verlaine. As the sympathetic principal struggles to contain the growing scandal in the face of media pressure and the school’s impending anniversary, Ana must choose whether to stand by her personal and political principles. A slow-burn, minor-key take on the moral hypocrisy of East and Central Europe’s ascendant right wing that recalls the work of modern masters like Radu Jude and Kirill Serebrennikov.
