In 1946, Romania’s wartime dictator and Nazi collaborator Marshal Ion Antonescu was executed, alongside three other officials. The incident was captured by amateur cameraman Ovidiu Gologan. In 1994, director Sergiu Nicolaescu recreated the scene for his period drama The Mirror, an exculpatory account of the Marshal’s life. In this experimental short, Radu Jude cuts together Gologan’s silent, black and white documentary footage with Nicolaescu’s dramatised version of events, exploring the formation of national myth, and the murky question of cinema’s role in creating historical memory.
