Nikt nie woła
Directed by Kazimierz Kutz • 1960 • Poland
Also known as Nobody’s Calling, Kazimierz Kutz’s haunting post-war romance is a portrait of a nation on its knees and hope among the ruins. In the chaotic days after Poland’s liberation, Bożek (Henryk Boukołowski), a former resistance fighter with a dangerous secret, finds himself in the western territories recently reclaimed from Germany. There, he enters into a romance with Lucyna (Zofia Marcinkowska) – but his wartime past is not finished with him yet. Adapted from his own novel by Józef Hen, Nikt nie woła proved controversial upon release and was eventually removed from screens. Recalling the exquisite alienation of Antonioni, it marks Kutz as an underappreciated master of the Polish Film School.
