Vera Shysh’s stop motion short captured the brutality and tenderness of life for political prisoners in Belarus. Inspired by a fairy tale written by the sister of an imprisoned friend, Shysh’s film centres of the anthropomorphised figure of the care package, or peradachka: deliveries sent by loved ones to inmates, containing carefully arranged selections of clothes and foodstuffs that function as an emotional and material link to the world outside their cells. Stop motion, with its tangible, tactile interaction between animator and material, proves the perfect medium for a tale about the emotional resonance of simple, everyday objects.
