The Romanian New Wave
Emerging at the turn of the millennium, the Romanian New Wave reinvigorated Eastern European cinema. With the likes of Cristi Puiu, Cristian Mungiu, and Radu Jude collecting awards from Europe’s top festivals, heads were soon turned to this remarkable domestic industry. Characterised initially by handheld realism and sharp social commentary, New Wave directors soon began to experiment formally as they found new ways to dissect their home country’s post-communist malaise.
