It’s Not My Film
Cult Comedies: six films on the absurdity of modern life

Directed by Maria Zbąska • 2024 • Poland
Maria Zbąska’s debut film is a charmingly cynical romantic comedy about rediscovering love in the darkest (and coldest) of places. Wanda (Zofia Chabiera) and Janek (Marcin Sztabiński) have reached an impasse in their marriage. He proposes a radical solution, and to his surprise, she accepts: they will hike 400 kilometres along Poland’s frozen Baltic coast in the depths of winter, observing a set of strict rules designed to either help them reconcile, or to bring their relationship to an end for good. Making great use of both the bleak beauty of the landscape and the comic absurdity of the endeavour, Zbąska avoids romcom cliché to capture the painful poignancy of love lost and found again.
